Microsoft came up with two major innovations that revolutionized the gaming console industry. One, Xbox came with an 8 GB hard disk. The function of the hard disk was to ostensibly enable individuals to save the game on the hard disk and access the same at a later date.
Anyone who had played games like Half Life on the computer will admit that saving at the right moment can make a huge difference to the individual’s progress in the game. The 8 GB hard disk meant that people could save numerous games without any worries of running out of space. The hard disk was also available for storage of music. This meant that the video gaming console was no longer restricted to games alone.
It was slowly being converted into a single entertainment device. A video gaming console that could double up as a music player as well had a lot of potential. Of course, the release of Apples iPhone and other such devices has changed the scenario completely. However, it was a revolutionary development when the Xbox was first released. Secondly, the console came with an in built Ethernet port that could be used to connect the device to the broadband internet.
This converted the gaming console into a specialized and customized computer device that was designed only for playing games. Before the Xbox was released, people played games on the computer along with various other tasks. Setting up a computer only for gaming was an expensive affair.
A smaller hard disk would do but the RAM card and the graphics card would have to be very powerful. Xbox moved ahead and stop being just a gaming console. Rather, it went on to become a small computer designed only for playing games.
The broadband internet connection also meant that online gaming was now possible without accessing the computer. These two developments have made a huge impact on the gaming industry since.
