  1. Resources are what can make or break any empire. But what if you had unlimited resources? This cheat is a dream come true for those who have struggled with Age of Empire III. Go to the data directory in the game folder and edit the proto.xml file using a text editor. Make sure that the file is not set to ‘Read only’ by checking its properties in Windows Explorer. Look for text that contains the word ‘Createof’ and you will end up with a long list that covers everything from food, money and wood. Go to the ‘InitialResourceCount’ tag and change the count to as high a number as you want and that the amount that each unit will have!

Strategy Game Of A Different Kind – Caesar And Sim City

Caesar III was the last release in the series and was one of the most popular releases of the game. The release offered a fantastic opportunity to gamers to participate in city building. The gamer begins as a person in charge of setting up a small settlement in and around Rome.

The job of the gamer is to arrange facilities and plan the progress of the city in such a manner that the city quickly becomes as prosperous as Rome itself and this will help the player reach the status of Caesar.

Caesar III offers military options as well. Of course, there is no scope for individual control of military personnel. Rather, the barracks have to be created and the formation instructions have to be issued to soldiers. Once this is done, the army will take over the task of protecting the city from invaders. You just have to make sure the army is out in the open at the appropriate moment.

What one loses in terms of flexibility in military administration, one gains in the civilian administration mode. The only way to improve population in the Age Of Empires was to build more houses. There was no regard for other basic amenities that are often needed when houses are constructed. It is possible to build houses without any connectivity whatsoever and still enjoy a good game in the Age Of Empires.

This is not possible in Caesar III. The game adopts a practical and realistic approach and prevents you from setting up houses and enjoying improved population if there is no connectivity. This is the reason why this game is very popular. It comes closest to the real life problems that administrators face when setting up cities.

Other games similar to Caesar are Sim City which helps you set up cities in a modern environment.

Protect A Wonder? Raze A Castle? Your Goal Affects Your Strategy In Age Of Empires

You will have to modify your playing strategy in Age of Empires depending upon your final goal. If you have to destroy the castle of your opponent to win the death match, it is obvious that you will need a very strong army combined with heavy destructive vehicles. Further, you will need lots of resources to repair the vehicles which are very prone to damage from even the least powerful infantry unit.

On the other hand, if you have to build a wonder and sustain it for two thousand years to win, you will obviously need lots and lots of stone. Why? For starters, the construction of the wonder is going to require a lot of resources.

Secondly, your position will become a hot target for all attacks the moment you announce the construction of your wonder. In such a scenario, it is advisable to build many layers of walls in and around your wonder and place villages at strategically chosen locations to ensure the walls are repaired at all times.

Once you have the defensive setup complete, you should focus on offensive units that will delay the advancement of the opposition army to the maximum extent possible. You should continue obtaining resources at a very fast pace so that you can construct another wonder very quickly in the event of destruction of your first wonder.

You will have to plan for offense as well as defense. Your army may be lured away by easy target and your wonder may be attacked and destroyed in the process.

To judge and decide whether you should commit your entire armed force to the task of destroying the wonder or whether you should try to out leave the opposition is a matter of judgment. There is no single strategy that will always work in Age of Empires. You will have to focus on the task on hand and act accordingly.

Learning from the enemy – a very important thing in Age of Empires

Do not expect to play Age of Empires and master it the very first time. It is highly unlikely that even an excellent of civilian administrator or military strategist will succeed at first attempt. You will have to evolve and assimilate various lessons even as you are playing. It is very important to learn from your enemy.

If you finally feel confident to move out of your town boundary and are shocked to find that your enemy has set up numerous military structures right outside your town, there is a valuable lesson hidden here. At first, you may feel that your enemy has committed mistake by placing military installations too close to your town.

However, you must understand that the enemy can quickly rip up a huge force to tackle any attack. The main attack force will come from the primary military enclave and the structures set up near your town will simply provide reinforcements. This means that you will be constantly harassed and may find it very difficult to gain an upper hand.

As time goes by, you will either lose patience or commit vital mistakes or you may adopt a defensive approach and shrink further into your boundary. In either case, the enemy is going to succeed.

Hence, you should setup offensive and defensive structures close to your enemy’s fortifications. Of course, the enemy is going to take action against you immediately. You should be prepared for the damage as long as you succeed enhancing your opponent and compel your opponent to loose valuable resources.

As long as you learn such lessons when the game is ongoing, you will find it easier to improve and enhance your chances of winning. On the other hand, if you play with a single approach and make no changes to it and do not have any regard for the actual playing conditions, chances are high that you may end up getting frustrated due to frequent losses.

What Is Your Final Goal In AoE? This Should Determine Your Approach

Playing a strategy game like the Age of Empires is like playing chess. You should know what to sacrifice and what to hold on to. If you treat each and every unit as a treasured one and if you spend a lot of time creating fortifications for each and every unit, chances are high that you will run out of resources.

If you are working towards a specific campaign goal, you should assess each and every unit with reference to the ultimate goal assigned by the game. For example, if your job is to destroy the castle of your opponent, then investing too much of stone and gold in building a huge wall around your fortifications does not make sense.

Once your opponent comes up with a few castles, it is just a question of time before you lose the game. In such a scenario, you may have to set up certain military and civilian installations in strategic points simply to divert your enemy.

Secondly, you may have to classify a certain members of your military as expendable and may simply have to let them fight it out only to lose. All this may seem like a terrible waste but it will help you buy some useful time, which will be helpful in tackling the final objective.

Sending a force that has been purposefully designed as a very small and compact one to cover lots of terrain with minimum damage to the enemy may help you complement the efforts of your scout.

Thirdly, focusing on specific structures of your enemy and backing out every time you are attacked will help you identify the weak points. This will require a holistic approach where your emphasis should be on the final goal of your campaign and not just on the units involved.

Scouting – Never Underestimate Their Importance In AoE Campaigns

The scouts are probably the most underestimated characters in Age of Empires. Very few people bothered to even make scouts. Most of us make one or two scouts for the novelty aspect and let them roam around in an aimless manner. Why is it important to have scouts?

Well, if you are playing a death match where you are competing with four or five other opponents simultaneously, identifying the weakest opponent and taking over the assets of the opponent can make a huge difference to your resources. If the weakest opponent has lots of gold hidden in his or her corner of the map, you can set a force and take over the opponent with minimum damage to yourself.

However, very few persons even think of exploring the map until they have sufficient resources and armed forces to launch the attack. At the end of the day, such persons invariably find themselves defending attacks and never initiating the same. In strategy games, intelligence is more valuable than gold.

If you know where all your enemies are placed and if you know the level of development in and around the region, you can easily assess your attack plans accordingly. For example, if your opponent has created multiple monasteries, then you should protect yourself from conversion.

On the other hand, if your opponent has created multiple heavy vehicle and catapult manufacturing units, you need to not just focus on building walls but also coming up with counter offensive vehicles on your own. This will help you fine tune your strategy and make sure you are prepared for the attacks until you are prepared to launch your own.

Hence, make sure you have sufficient number of scouts roaming around the map. You may lose many scouts to enemy attacks. That is inevitable and unavoidable. Make sure they are replaced as early as possible.

Falling To Attacks At Brink Of Progress In Aoe? Try Defensive Walls

Do you find yourself being defeated by your enemy simply because you are not being allowed to proceed to the next age in Age of Empires? If you start in the Stone Age and are attacked by your enemies even as you are at the last stages of moving on to the Iron Age, then your progress will be of no use whatsoever. So, what steps should you take?

It is important to understand that there is a huge difference in defeating a final attacked and stopping and ambush. The fact that your enemy has chosen to attack you very early in the death match clearly indicates that he or she is trying to destroy you before you become a threat.

If you simply make it too uneconomical for the enemy to continue the attack, you will automatically succeed. How? Well, why don’t you focus on researching walls and why don’t you build a wall to protect your encampment? The idea of building a wall and protecting your site may seem unnecessary when it will just be made of wood.

Well, you always have the option of moving on to the next age and then converting the stonewall into palisades and then into iron and brick walls. Further, once you create the walls, you will have sufficient warning before the attack reaches your town center.

If you build the wall at a wide expanse, you can easily use your military buildings to create more cavalrymen and archers even as the attack is taking place on the outskirts of your town center.

It is advisable to build a military establishment slightly far away from the wall. The idea is to enhance your view and get an early warning of an impending attack. The structure that you create is not to be protected. Rather, it is merely a bait that will distract your enemy while you get sufficient time to plan for reprisals.

Villagers – Very Useful Assets For Various Tasks In Age Of Empires

The toughest aspect of executing any campaign in any version of Age of Empires is the ability to balance all your objectives simultaneously. Ignore your villagers and they will stand idle simply because the crops that you had sown have been fully utilized or the trees that you ordered for cutting have been fully cut.

Life in the Age of Empires would have been a lot simpler had villagers been given the ability to think intelligently and act on their own. However, the sad truth is that they operate under your orders and you will have to make sure each and every villager is busy even when you are in the middle of a big battle.

Handling villagers requires houses. For each and every house you build, you will enjoy the ability of creating five more characters. You cannot create too many villagers at once because your army will end up becoming too small.

Of course, you can always create a large number of villagers in the beginning and use them to improve your vital resources. Once their job is done, you can kill the extra villagers of yourself and convert them into members of your infantry, cavalry and other military units.

It is advisable to allocate slightly higher number of villagers to that resource which is not easily available. This is because you may end up sharing your gold or your stone with your enemy and this may affect your long term ability to plan.

If you have a large number of villagers mining small quantities of gold and stone, you will accumulate maximum quantity in the shortest period of time. On the other hand, if you have successfully blocked a huge portion of the forest for your use, you can setup lumber camps close to the forest and enjoy steady supply of wood.

Age Of Empires – A Pinnacle In The World Of Strategy Gaming

Why are strategy games so popular on the internet? Well, not every individual will get the opportunity to command a group of villagers and plan the future of a local economy. Or, plan a military expedition to destroy and abolish the military installations of the anyway before they do the same to you. Even if people do get a chance to leave these lives, the risks involved make it an unenjoyable process.

On the other hand, strategy games help you plan your campaign and start it all over again if you happen to mess it up. Thousands of your army men can be slaughtered and you can restart the entire campaign by just a click of your mouse. Hence, strategy games are the closest you come to being a master strategist without any risks attached.

The Age of Empires was one of the first strategy games that brought the past to the computer screen. It led to numerous other games like Caesar and other such administrative games.

What makes the Age of Empires different is that it is a combination of civilian and military administration. The civilian part of the job involves a collection of wood, stone, gold and food. You will have to plan your crops, identify foraging sites, offshore fishing and deep sea fishing options. You will have to plan your installations in such a manner that you are never short of wood and other essential items.

Your military capacity is dependent on the level of raw materials you obtain. You also have the option of trading for different goods and products. Of course, all these advanced options will be available only after you complete certain levels and reach a specific age.

What makes this exercise a really fun is that you can plan your military conquests simultaneously. You can improve your armaments and move from plain old infantry with clubs to armored cavalry and crossbow man to take on your enemy.

Getting Introduced To The World Of Gaming – Here Is How To Proceed

If you are just getting introduced to the world of gaming, chances are high you will feel completely lost because of the large number of sequels to popular games. Should you play halfway first or should you opt for half life two? Should you opt for Age of Empires or should you opt for the second or the third version? Or should you go for the spin off -Age of Mythology?

A lot depends on how you like to do things. If you love going in for a layered approach, you can start with the first version and move on to the next. This will not necessarily help you enjoy the game better. You can easily play the second or the third version independently.

Game developers would lose a lot of money if they insisted that each and every gamer should follow the chronological order. Hence, the final choice boils down to your personal preference.

If you like to play the first version first and move on to the next, you should not make the mistake of buying all the versions simultaneously. If you buy the first version of the Age of Empires, chances are high that you will play it for a very long time before you would feel the urge to move onto the next version or release.

On the other hand, you can easily finish Half Life by playing it regularly for a week or a fortnight at the most. In such a scenario, having Half Life 2 in your hand will help.

You may never get satisfied of playing the death match game in Age of Empires. You start with lots of food, wood and gold and have to build your army and destroy all opposition. From changing the civilization to changing the map – there are many options available which will keep you interested for a very long time.
